Sparrowhawk’s 2012 Redux

or How to Take a Company from 2 to 100MPH in One Crazy Year There is a lot to be said for being overwhelmed. I mean, without the luxury of losing focus, a lot seems to get accomplished. That could be why start-ups hold such appeal – they are fast, intense, sexy … and utterly

When SHK joined accessible shuttles team we had the nuts and bolts of an operation; buses, staff, signage, loadzones etc. SHK was able to take these raw materials and turn them into an operation that worked effectively on the ground, not just on paper. SHK’s experience, knowhow and people skills with a wide range of stakeholders was invaluable in being able to make the operation work seamlessly. It has been a pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with SHK – They have been a massive reason for the success of the project.

The table top exercises from the Operational Readiness Reviews at both Weymouth and Eton Dorney were first rate (excellent). The Reviews brought all the teams and agencies together, highlighted the shortfalls, and gave us an insight into what to expect and how to deal with it. The team really developed after SHK’s Operational Readiness Reviews.

It really helped to have a team of professionals with actual Games experience there to review where we were up to with our planning, and to help us re-focus and think about where we had gaps in our plans. Having never been involved in an event of this type before it was also good to hear how enthusiastic and passionate the Sparrowhawk team members were about their field of work, and this certainly helped higher level of enthusiasm within our team.

Sparrowhawk brought significant value to the Games planning process through their Operational Readiness Review Programme. We initially brought them in for a single review and quickly realized the value of expanding the program to include thirteen of our venues. Sparrowhawk’s involvement resulted in aligned partner organisations working to common goals and a common tempo/dynamic. Reduced costs, mitigated risk, collective ownership of the issues (and their resolution) and subsequent “one team” operational delivery were achieved. I would commend highly this process to future event organizers.

London 2012 presented the Authority with its biggest challenge in its 46 year history with four of its venues being used for the competition. Sparrowhawk were selected to lead on our operational and C3 training and readiness testing which due to their experience, knowledge and manner ensured we were fully prepared for the event. The facilitators have a great ability of setting the realistic scene and challenging your process and procedures to ensure all are fit for purpose.
